What a movie it is? Just sit down and you will be in for a treat. The movie takes you along a good ride with good acting, complimented by beautiful music and serene backgrounds. It tells the tale of a horse and about his miraculous journey through the Europe during the first world war. A tale of kindness, pity and all that is good in this world saves this horse and reunites him with his original master, a 17 year old lad.
The movie starts with the birth of a horse in the quaint surroundings with full of shrubs, high hills and greenery in England. A young lad fancies the horse, which belongs to his neighbor, and longs to be friends with it. Incidentally, his father buys the same horse in a local market and brings him home.
The boy names the horse, joey and they become thick friends. The boy trains the horse and loves him like a brother. The war comes and takes the horse away from the lad.
From here the legendary journey of Joey begins. He passes through many masters, many countries and finally runs for his freedom when his friend, a black horse he meets during the journey dies. He gets caught in the mesh wires in the no man's land, where a war was raging between England and Germany, and is left for dead. Two soldiers, one from England and one from Germany, boldly come forward to rescue him and they form an unlikely bond between themselves. The horse was freed and the English man takes it to his camp. The young lad from Denver had also joined and survived the war. Eventually he saves the horse life and finally they go home. All is well that ends well.
It is not a war movie. It is something more. The war, the sentiment, the drama, the friendship, nothing goes overboard. Everything is properly balanced. The music just blends with the surroundings and elevates the scenes. The acting is sublime and everyone, however, small their role is leaves an impact. Every actor enacts his part so well, and the movie just rolls on. The backdrop of every scene is really good, especially the starting and the ending.
All that is good with the man, saves the horse and reunites him with his young master. It is one of those movies where you feel peace at yourself and don't want to leave at the end.
Kudos to Spielberg and hats off to the entire team... Loved the movie and it is going in my permanent collection....
